STAR Smog Station
What is a STAR smog station?
A STAR station is a smog check facility that has been certified by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) for meeting higher performance standards. STAR stations are authorized to test vehicles that DMV has flagged as “directed” — meaning they must be tested at a STAR-certified location. Our station is a STAR Certified Test Only facility.
Do I need a STAR smog check?
Check your DMV renewal notice. If it says “STAR station required” or “directed vehicle,” then yes — you must go to a STAR certified station like ours. If you’re not sure, bring your renewal notice and we’ll help you determine what’s needed.
What is the difference between STAR and regular smog?
STAR stations meet stricter quality standards set by the California BAR. The test itself is the same — the difference is in the station’s certification level, accuracy standards, and equipment requirements. STAR stations are more closely monitored for accuracy.
DMV Registration
Does the smog station send results to DMV electronically?
Yes! We transmit your smog certificate electronically to the DMV immediately after your vehicle passes. There’s no paper certificate to mail — the DMV receives your results right away so you can complete your registration renewal without delay.
How long does DMV take to receive smog results?
Our electronic submission is usually processed by DMV within minutes. In most cases, you can renew your registration online the same day you pass your smog check.
Do I need smog for a title transfer or selling a car?
Yes. California law requires a valid smog certificate (less than 90 days old) when transferring vehicle ownership. The seller is responsible for providing the smog certificate. Vehicles 4 model years old or newer are exempt.
Failed Smog Tests
What happens if my car fails smog?
If your vehicle fails, we’ll explain exactly what went wrong and provide a detailed report. As a Test Only station, we don’t do repairs — this means our results are unbiased. You’ll need to take your vehicle to a repair shop, then return to us for a free retest within 60 days.
Will a check engine light fail smog?
Yes. If your check engine light (MIL) is on, your vehicle will automatically fail the smog inspection. You must have the issue diagnosed and repaired, and the light turned off, before testing. Note: simply clearing the codes without proper repair won’t work — the vehicle’s monitors need to be “ready.”
What are common reasons for failing smog?
The most common reasons include: check engine light on, failed catalytic converter, bad oxygen sensor, EVAP system leaks, incomplete drive cycle after battery disconnect, and emissions above threshold. Older vehicles may also fail due to worn engine components.

Preparation Tips
How do I prepare my car for a smog check?
For the best chance of passing: make sure your check engine light is off, drive your car for at least 15-20 minutes before testing (warm engine runs cleaner), ensure the gas cap seals properly, and don’t disconnect your battery in the weeks before testing (monitors need to be ready). If you recently had repairs done, complete a drive cycle before coming in.
